We were looking for a nice buffet, not because we were hungry but because we didn't know what we wanted to eat and a buffet would offer choices. Somehow, we ended up at Berta's Mexican Buffet. We seemed to be the only American speakers in there. None of the employees spoke even basic American and my Spanish has suffered a lot since my hearing went. I can figure out what's being said in American, but have a much harder time in other languages. The language barrier made it somewhat harder to figure out what we were supposed to do. But we muddled our way through. Buffets work pretty much the same wherever you go, right? Let me rave about the beans. I am super picky about my beans. Any beans. And refried beans especially. These beans were lovely, chunky, runny, just the way Tia Renate did (who lived in the other side of the duplex when I was a child and taught me how to make tortillas and beans for breakfast). I could have greedily eaten bowls of those beans, but I only took one serving. They were delicious and I savored every bite. The rice was fluffy and went well with the beans. I added a scoop of the pork dish, a flauta, and a double scoop of the mixed vegetables (squash, zucchini, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower) to finish off my plate. They brought me out 2 tortillas, which made for a complete and filling meal. But not so full I couldn't find room for a scoop of flan and a wedge of watermelon for dessert. The flan was just the right texture, and the meal finished with the slice of watermelon was a cold and crisp end to a delightfully delicious meal. My companion went back for seconds, having had the beef and jalapeno dish and then the sausage dish. The cashier spoke fluent American, which helped a lot in paying for the meal. My companion doesn't speak any other languages, and as I said, with my hearing mostly gone, my Spanish (and other languages) suffer. Brush up on your Spanish and give them a visit. You won't find Tex-Mex here - no enchiladas, burritos, tacos. You will find deliciously prepared entrees and sides that will dance on your tongue, fill your belly, and leave you happy.

This place is a hidden gem! I only found out about it due to a small write up in a newspaper! The locals like to keep it a secret! Well, now I know why! It's authentic Mexican food and it's AMAZING! It's a buffet, which I'm not usually a huge fan of but... I will eat it to have Berta's!!! The buffet changes daily and when a pan is emptied something new comes out in its place so I can't tell you exactly what you'll get when you go... but I can tell you that you will NOT be disappointed! The place is not fancy... but it is extremely clean and the food is amazing! And surprisingly the buffet is only $9.95! Enjoy!!!
